Today we are at the Village Coconut Island Resort in Phuket. A contrasting change from our boutique hideaway experience at Sala Phuket Resort. From one side of luxury to the next. While previous days were spent in privacy and seclusion we are now on a resort island with excitement and activities at our fingertips. Okay we don’t take full advantage of this excitement but on this stay, we are in a 2 bedroom, pool villa on a private island. Five-star luxury. Amazing views. We make the most of the villa while we have the chance. On the rare ventures from the villa we were in search of food and local life in the surrounding areas. For information on the resort and activities at The Village Coconut Island check the website. For poking around and travel in surrounding areas check below.

Escape to Island Life

The resort receptionist appeared baffled by my request to explore the island. After three failed attempts for advice I decide to explore myself. With so much going on in the resort people often overlook whats going on around. Fact is you don’t have to go far to find authentic local life. Within meters of resort boundaries is a unique, island life. The resort surrounded by villagers who appear somewhat surprised to see a tourist pottering beyond safety. In a short 5 minute walk I did see some cool local life. A girl kicking a baby chicken. Local kids launching a boat “noong, song, sam”. Local fishermen fixing nets and chiseling wooden boats. A whole lot of rubber tree plants. Authentic local life on the resort’s doorstep. Locals say hello, wave, and stop to talk to me about fishing and prawns. The community here as expected are a local fishing community. My advice to anyone visiting the Village Coconut Island is to get out and see this unique local life. Why fly across the world to find island paradise and then not see island paradise.

Travel to the Mainland and Laem Hin Pier

For the claustrophobic. Travel between Coconut Island and the mainland of Phuket is quite simple. A free ‘water taxi’ leaves from Laem Hin Pier in Phuket to the Village Coconut Island every 30 minutes starting 06.00am finishing 23.30pm. The same going the opposite. A short 15 minute long-tail boat journey each way. The last boat arriving to the island is just before midnight. On the Phuket mainland Laem Hin Pier is a surprisingly busy area famous for its seafood and floating restaurants. We didn’t actually make it to the floating restaurants (10 minute walk from Laem Hin Pier) but we did call in at Laem Hin Seafood which sits adjacent to the wooden jetty. This is the place to go for cheap and tasty seafood. We call in 3 times during our stay to stuff our faces with an exciting menu of local Phuket dishes and Southern Thai food. For those planning to travel further – again it is simple. There is a taxi rank on arrival at Laem Hin Pier (as with Phuket the taxis are overpriced and a 30 minute taxi takes you to most areas of interest in Phuket. Add an extra 15 minutes to reach the airport. For travel to Phuket airport the fixed taxi price is 700 Baht from Laem Hin Pier.
