Extravagance that’s fair on the pocket and without overt pretentiousness. Mia restaurant Thailand pretty much ticks all the boxes when it comes to fine ingredients; uni, foie gras, caviar, truffle, lobster and more.
Chefs Top and Michelle at Mia restaurant introduce a new menu, the Taste of Mia with Vegan and Vegetarian versions. It makes me tired just thinking about it, imagine how they must feel, but these two are no strangers to hardship. They’ve weathered various shut downs and even dabbled in a side venture, delivering homemade Laksa in the COVID 19 “down time” period from their apartment. There’s no mistaking their hard work and their experience with every new menu.
One highlight I find is always at the very start, the Mia snacks are thoughtful and meticulous in execution, importantly they’re all so damn delicious. Notably the Duxelle Tartlet; Hollandaise, Truffle and Crispy Rice Cake Beef Tartare.
The Taste of Mia menu is heavily seafood oriented, with 3 consecutive dishes of seafood; Lobster Perfume; Tomato Consommé ,and Caviar*, the Crab Chawanmushi; Artichoke, Bafun Uni* and the Bluefin Tuna; Crustacean Jelly, Lentils and Avocado. All excellent and highly refreshing, with the Bluefin Tuna being the most quirky and interesting to taste, although I would have appreciated a vegetable based dish between them to give more distinction and appreciation to each.
The duck was to-die-for. How have I never tried Top’s duck before and I’ve had my fair share of fine duck dishes, this is right up there! And then there’s Michelle. I said it once and I’ll say it again, she’s brilliant. I’m yet to fault any of her creations, and the Kiwi G & T and Mia’s Cereal Bowl; Malted Milk Chocolate and Corn is no exception.
Although there’s more room to grow for this young couple, they’ve taken another step up the ladder. I do wish at times they had the confidence to do less, that’s sometimes more, but a menu of this quality, price and thriving talent behind it, who can complain?! Go try.
Oh! The service is fantastic, they never missed a beat and kept us entertained, I would also return just to hang out with the badass service crew.
